How to turn gutter oil into jet fuel

China's domestic commercial aircraft with independently developed bio-aviation fuel completed its first flight missions at Shanghai Pudong Airport and Shandong Dongying Airport, marking important progress in the application of China's independent research and development of green aviation technology.

A China-made ARJ21 regional jet and a China-made C919 large passenger jet took off from Shanghai Pudong Airport and Dongying Airport in Shandong province, respectively, and landed smoothly after more than an hour of flight, successfully completing the first flight of domestic bio-jet fuel refueling.

Cao Dongxue, chief expert of SINOPEC: The aviation fuel used in the test flight is mainly catering waste oil, which is refined from what we usually call "gutter oil" and blended with ordinary aviation fuel at a ratio of 40%. This successful test flight not only verified the compatibility and safety of domestic bio-aviation fuel and domestic commercial aircraft, but also laid the foundation for the future commercial scale application of bio-aviation fuel.
